Weeds are starting to grow - late April to early May in Perth Western Australia

If you have areas of bare earth in your garden, most likely there are countless tiny and small weeds starting off now, so now is the time to stop them. Scrape them away before they use up the nutrients in your soil, and get big and bulky to dispose of, and hard to pull out. There is no need go shopping for toxic expensive herbicide chemicals that poison the soil. There is no need to buy anything except a simple garden tool that should last you forever if you store it out of the weather. You could probably find a good second-hand one cheap at the tip shop. The tool for this task is a garden hoe. There are various designs and sizes, but what matters most is using it, now. The advantage of using the hoe to tackle weed seedlings is that it keeps you upright without having to kneel down or bend over, but for small weeds in fiddly spots you might need to put on your garden gloves, get down and scrape the weeds with a garden hand trowel. I am sure that when most people think of garden hand trowels they think of a shiny metal one with a handle made of colourful hard plastic. It has been many years since I used one like that. Too often I have found that the solder connecting the spade to the rest of the trowel breaks and the whole thing becomes useless. Also, the disadvantage of metal tools is that they can rust and corrode when stored outdoors. In my garden I only use dirt cheap nylon/fibreglass composite hand trowels which are strong, have no weak point that will snap, do not corrode and do not seem to be affected by sun exposure or damp. This type of hand trowel is so cheap and weather-resistant that I keep a number of them at various spots around the back garden permanently so that I always have one handy. Another handy non-corrosive thing that I have in my garden is plastic lattice left lying flat on the ground to stop neighbourhood cats from digging poo holes in my garden beds where I like to grow root vegetables and onion family vegetables.
Next time the weather is dry, get out and sort out the big gardening problem of weeds while it is still small. You might need to scrape away weed regrowth a few times before the summer heat arrives, drying out the soil. The physical activity will help keep you fit and trim, ready for the bikini season.
